Michael Um

Admissions Consultant & Systems Manager

The Ohio State University (BA in Computer & Information Science)

Michael is an education specialist having spent six years in the private sector instructing college-bound students in college preparatory exams such as the SAT and iBT TOEFL, as well as two years in private overseas education consulting.

Michael spent most of his youth moving from one place to another; by the time he enrolled at the Ohio State University, he had attended twelve different schools. This gave him a unique, multifaceted perspective on life. Drawing from his various experiences, Michael became interested in Arts & Design. His inspiration comes from empathy and the human perspective—a way to channel the raw emotions in a universal form. After graduation, Michael moved to Korea where he found his calling in education. He enjoyed the dynamism of the classroom and the minds of the students that occupy it. Today, Michael works at IvyConnection to help guide students on their own journey into the fray.

What led you to IvyConnection?
The personal level at which we can immerse ourselves in the students’ stories and help them find that unique perspective that makes them special. It’s hard work, but very well worth it.

What do you love most about IvyConnection?
The people I work with. They make waking up in the morning and coming to work something to look forward to, and not dread.

What is your favorite quote?
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if your were to live forever.” - Mahatma Ghandi

What is your lifelong goal?
To really understand each other. I believe true peace is achieved through empathy, and to try and understand each other is the most valuable use of our time on this earth.
